Mega Plush Lashes? You bet!

Hey lovelies,

I am always on the hunt for the perfect mascara. One that will add some length, LOTS of volume and be able to hold a curl all day long without flaking. Impossible you say? Thats what I thought too, until I came across Maybelline's Mega Plush Volume Express mascara.

From Maybelline's webiste:

Now, mega volume goes mega plush.
- Our first gel-mousse mascara with 40% less hard waxes for massive volume with a supple touch
- Extra-soft, patented flexor brush caresses lashes
- Lashes never brittle or flaky
- Available in washable and waterproof formulas

At first, I found the formula too wet, it needed about a week of use to get a little thicker, but once it thickened up, I found myself reaching for this mascara over my all-time favourite, Cover Girl's Lash Blast.
This mascara allows you to build good volume in two coats without looking spider-y or clumpy. It adds a little bit of length to my lashes, but nothing overwhelming, which is fine by me since I have long lashes naturally. My most important criteria in a good mascara are ability to build volume and the ability to hold a curl. My lashes are very straight, and even after curling them, they tend to straighten out again after a few hours. I found this mascara was able to hold the curl all day, which is unheard of for a non-waterproof mascara (at least on my lashes anyways). It washes off with soap and water and doesn't flake throughout the day or irritate my sensitive eyes.

Two coats of Maybelline's Mega Plush Volume Express

Overall, I give this mascara 5/5. It delivers on all of its claims, and is great for everyday wear. However, when I go out at night, I'll still probably grab my Lash Blast waterproof for that extra drama.

Sock buns and scaredy cats

Hey lovelies,

Sometimes, I like to pretend that I'm braver than I actually am. The truth is, I'm a chicken who can't watch scary movies alone and hides under the covers whenever I hear a strange noise in my apartment. So I don't know what possessed me to take a haunted tour of Chicago BY MYSELF! Of course there were other people on the tour with me, but I went alone. Needless to say, I was scared to death by the time I got home and slept with all the lights on in my apartment for the next couple of nights. The tour itself was a mix of ghost stories, visits to different sites in Chicago where these scary events took place, and lot of history about the city. I really loved the tour because I'm a huge history buff and Chicago has such an interesting past filled with disasters (The Great Chicago fire which completely leveled the city), mobsters (Al Capone and John Dillinger anyone?), and serial killers (like John Wayne Gacy). I would definitely take this tour again, however, I'm not going alone!

Now, onto the outfit I chose to wear to get the crap scared out of me. It was a little chilly that night even though its August, so I chose to wear a light sweater layered over a tank top. As for my hair, I took the easy route with a sock bun. For those of you unfamiliar with what a sock bun is, its basically a clean gym sock thats been manipulated to form the base of my bun. My hair is naturally very thick, so using a sock makes my bun pretty big, and I love it! The bigger the hair, the closer to heaven! LOL

Small Haul Time!

Hey lovelies,

I had a free day last week, so what better way to spend it than driving for an hour out to the suburbs and heading to the Cosmetics Company Store? After I was done there, I decided to make it a whole day devoted to make-up and headed to Sephora.

Heres what I picked up:
L-R: Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, Bobbi Brown Cream Concealer in Warm Beige, MAC Surf Baby Bronzer in Refined Golden, and MAC Surf Baby eyeshadow in Sun Blonde

I love this bronzer! Its the perfect shade for my NW40 complexion! It contains a fine golden shimmer, so I like to wear it at night, while keeping my daytime makeup mostly matte. Its great for contouring and can also be used as a blush. Unfortunately, it is limited edition, but if you live near Chicago, the CCO still carries many of the items from the Surf Baby collection.

Sun Blonde is frost shadow, and a gorgeous shade of gold. I love using golds and bronzes during the summer, I feel they are the perfect complement to tanned skin. This is also a limited edition color, but can still be found at the CCO.

The Bobbi Brown cream concealer comes with a concealer on top and a yellow-based setting powder on the bottom. I love the texture of this concealer. Its very creamy, but doesn't settle into fine lines and it lasts all day. I love that it comes with a setting powder because they work very well together.

I also picked up the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray at Sephora. This is an amazing product! A couple of sprays on your face in the morning, and your makeup stays put all day! I don't use it every day, because I don't wear a lot of makeup to the hospital, but its perfect for those nights you just want to party. It keeps your makeup in place, even if you sweat! Its also perfect for brides who want to keep their wedding makeup in place all day and all night. It photographs like a dream, I swear!

Have any of you been to the CCO lately? Find any good deals?

Peplum & Polka Dots

Hey lovelies,

My two obsessions lately have been peplum tops and skirts, and polka dots. So you can imagine my excitement when I found a top that has both! This top is so versatile, it can be worn with a pencil skirt like I've done, or its a really great way to dress up a boring pair of jeans. Because the top is so full, its best paired with something tight on the bottom to avoid adding extra bulk to your frame.
I'm now on the hunt for the perfect peplum dress!

Have any of you been loving the peplum trend as much as I have?

Rave: Clinique Age Defense BB Cream

Hey lovelies,

These days it seems like Beauty Balms (aka "BB creams") are all the rage, with most major make-up companies releasing their own version of them. For those of you unfamiliar with BB creams, they originated in Asia and have only recently made their way to North America. They are multi-tasking creams that serve as a moisturizer, SPF protection, and antioxidants (usually) so they provide light to medium coverage and improve your skins overall condition over time.
I've been anxious to try these creams out to see if they live up to their claims. I did some research online and read a lot of reviews, before finally settling on Clinique's Age Defense BB cream in shade #3 (for reference my skin is NC30-40, depending on how tan I am).

I can't say enough good things about this product! It has light-to-medium coverage (depending on how much you use) and is very good at evening out my skintone without looking like I have make-up on.  If I have any blemishes I need to cover, all I need is a tiny bit of concealer layered over the BB cream and I'm good to go! It lasts a good 8 hours I notice any fading and it does not oxidize or get oily in my T-zone. I usually set it with a little bit of MAC Mineralize Natural powder, and I find that the two work really well together. I love that this product has an SPF of 30, so my skin is protected without having to layer on the sunscreen.

Weekend recap: Lollapalooza

Hey lovelies,

Chicago was overrun with concert goers from August 3-5 when Lollapalooza came to town. For those of you not familiar with the concert, its a 3 day event jam packed with artists from all different genres. My friend and I got tickets for the Saturday show because our favorite acts were on that day (Avicii, Frank Ocean, Santigold, The Weeknd, Calvin Harris, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers). The day started at 11am, but due to thunderstorms, the concert got postponed until 6pm. I was disappointed because half of our day was cut short and all the acts had to be jammed into a short time span, but we were still able to catch our favorite ones. The best act by far was Frank Ocean! He's even better live than he is on his albums, so if you ever get the chance, definitely go see him in concert, it was an amazing experience.
Also, due to all the rain, the park was turned into a giant mud pit! I clearly didn't factor this into my outfit choice because I wore new white runners, and by the end of the night, they were brown and muddy. So were my legs! Yuck!
Here are some pics of the day........

My outfit:
Shorts - Forever 21
Tank - Urban Behavior
Hat - Lids
Shoes - Foot Locker

Wearing white to a mud pit was a bad idea!

The crowds were insane! So many people!
